Voters Reject Dissolving Duxbury Beach Committee After Debate On Oversight
Key Points
- Proposal to dissolve the inactive Beach Committee was defeated
- Town Manager argued professional staff have replaced the committee's role
- Residents successfully argued for maintaining citizen oversight
Town Meeting rejected a proposal to dissolve the long-standing Duxbury Beach Committee, which has not held a formal meeting since 2021. Town Manager R. Read argued the committee has become a vestige of governance
as beach operations have become more professionalized under town staff, but residents voiced concerns about losing a formal channel for public input.
Resident S. Wheatley warned against agency capture,
stating that citizens need direct oversight of town employees who may become too familiar with their roles. Resident A. Babcock also spoke in favor of keeping the committee, suggesting that instead of disbanding it, the town should breathe some new life into it
to address issues like bird management and beach restoration. The motion to dissolve the committee failed 83 to 95.
Motion: To approve Article 16 (Dissolution).
Vote: Failed 83-95
