Voters Approve $1.75 Million For Alden School Feasibility Study

Key Points

  • $1,750,000 approved for Alden School feasibility study
  • Teacher testimony highlighted severe flooding and water infiltration
  • Study is required to remain in the state reimbursement pipeline

Residents overwhelmingly approved $1,750,000 for a feasibility study of the Alden School under Article 12, following emotional testimony about the building's deteriorating condition. The study, conducted in partnership with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA), will determine if the school should be repaired, renovated, or replaced. If eventually approved for construction, the town expects a 35% reimbursement from the state.

Superintendent Dr. D. Klingaman and teacher J. Burns described a constant battle to keep the building dry and safe. Burns, the school librarian, told the meeting, I am the owner of the flooded library. Water is a major problem. It comes down, it comes up, it comes in from the side. Building Committee Chair J. Lemieux warned that rejecting the study now would forfeit the town's current position in the MSBA pipeline, forcing Duxbury to start the multi-year application process over from the beginning.
