Mayflower Cemetery to Expand with $800,000 Project as Burial Space Dwindles

Key Points

  • $800,000 expansion of Mayflower Cemetery approved
  • Project funded entirely by cemetery revenue, not property taxes
  • Burial and columbarium space is reaching capacity
  • Design will focus on harmonizing with the existing historic site

Duxbury will move forward with an $800,000 expansion of the Mayflower Cemetery after voters approved Article 17. The project aims to address a looming shortage of burial space in the town. Project representative Bob Hayes informed the meeting that burial space is rapidly running out and that the town has already completely depleted its available columbarium space for cremated remains.

Crucially, Hayes noted that the project will use no tax-generated funds. Instead, the $800,000 will be drawn from the Sale of Lots and Graves fund, which is comprised of revenue generated by the cemetery itself. The design and construction will focus on maximizing burial capacity while ensuring the new sections harmonize with the aesthetic of the historic cemetery.

The expansion is seen as a necessary step to maintain the town's ability to provide cemetery services to residents. The article passed with nearly unanimous support, with only five dissenting votes recorded.

Motion: I move that the town approve Article 17.

Vote: Passed 167-5
