Duxbury Approves $1.2 Million in Community Preservation Projects
Key Points
- Funding covers a wide range of projects from playground repairs to historic mural restoration.
- Accessibility upgrades at Shipyard Lane Beach passed despite neighbor opposition.
- Soil testing was approved for the Brooks athletic fields at the old high school site.
Voters approved a package of 10 articles (Articles 23-32) funded by the Community Preservation Act (CPA), totaling over $1.2 million for recreation, historic preservation, and open space projects. CPC Chair Holly Morris noted the town currently maintains a robust $5.5 million balance in its preservation funds.
Most projects passed with little resistance, including $140,000 for playground resurfacing and $60,000 to restore a historic 1820s mural at the King Caesar House. However, Article 32, which allocated $15,000 for accessibility improvements at Shipyard Lane Beach, drew opposition from neighbors. Residents Mike Healey and Michael Segallini expressed concerns that the improvements would attract late-night drinking and create a nuisance,
though Morris clarified the project involves no new hardscaping or concrete.
Other approved items included $92,000 for a barn at the DeLorenzo Farm, $45,000 for the Bay Farm Trail, and $90,860 for soil testing at the Brooks athletic fields, the site of the former high school.
